The Authentic Mexico Gourmet Gala
On September 16, 2018 I photographed my first event for Tribeza - a culture magazine in Austin, Tx. I was so nervous at first. Never in my photographer dreams did I imagine going to fancy galas and parties for work to shoot them for a magazine, but there I was, walking into the Long Center to photograph The Authentic Mexico Gourmet Gala. I gave the volunteers at the check in table my name with “with Tribeza” at the end of it. Well, it did sure sound so exciting to say those words! I followed a server up the elevator to where the party was being held, and immediately felt like a fish out of water. If you know me in real life, you would know that I am definitely not the type of person that goes to galas on a regular basis. I mean, I consider Jack Allen’s to be a fancy place to eat.
It took a few minutes, but those feelings quickly passed as I got to work because that’s what I was there for - to photograph and document this amazing event. I explained to people who I was and who I was shooting for. Some of them were interested and asked if I know “so and so”. I actually don’t know “so-and-so”. The only person I know at Tribeza is Holly, and surprise, we went to school together! Holly is also a St. Ed’s grad and we took a film photography class during my first year.
The Authentic Mexico Gourmet Gala shares a different culture of Mexico and cuisine each year as a celebration of our ties to the country. This year, the gala showcased Veracruz and the highlighted chefs at the gala were:
Zarela Martinez of ¡Zarela! La Cocina Veracruz
Rick Lopez of La Condesa
Robert Espinosa of Tacodeli
Kevin Taylor of ATX Cocina
Simon Madera of Tacoflats
Daniel Brooks of Licha’s Cantina
Juliann Stoddart and Austin Finley of Parkside Projects
Sharon Watkins of Chez Zee American Bistro
Tita Jolliffee of Art in the Food
Rosa Loza of Canon and Belle
It was so much fun to try little bites from all these different restaurants! Not going to lie, Tacodeli definitely held a place in my heart. The event was so much fun, and it was wonderful to celebrate Mexican culture!
